The kitegen concept: high altitude wind power based on kites. In this configuration (“stem”), the kite reaches altitudes of the order of 1000 m; pulling on a power generator located on the ground. High altitude wind power promises to be a low cost and widely available technology able, in principle, to provide amounts of energy comparable, and even superior, to the present production based on fossil fuels. See here an animated representation of how a stem works. Video Rating: 4 / 5
Question by earthsun@pacbell.net: Say we find ways to take energy out of the atmosphere. How do we use it in ways that maintain global cooling?
We put up enough high altitude wind power “two miles up, Makani Windmills on kites” that we actually directly significantly sustainably lower the temperature on this planet. [Global cooling, every KWH taken by us cools down earth 859,845 calories, or 3412 Btu's.]
Simply, stupidly we COULD use all that power in ways that turn it right back into heat.
Or, we could look for ways that both do useful work and lock up significant quantities of energy: aluminum ~ useful stuff, extremely energy intensive; diamonds ~ takes lots of power, takes out lots of carbon.
What’s TOPS your list of ways to use abundant power (a by-product of our global cooling project) that are both needed on the planet and which also sequester away LOTS of heat for a long time??
(More on Makani from PBS science nerd, Bob Cringley www.pbs.org/cringely/pulp… order of magnitude drop in price (20:1?); fossil fuels can’t compete; clean, green, renewable, decentralized; with thanks to Google.)

Answer by Chris_Knows In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, kites were used for lifting military observers to heights from which they could observe the disposition of enemy forces.
During World War II (1939-1945), kites were also used as gunnery targets.
French Military kites have long been popular with kitefliers. Their lifting power and stability make them ideal for high altitude flying.
Rush 300 PRO Mark III version. 3 lines for ultimate safety and reverse relaunch. This kite generates more power than a standard 3 meter kite. Chris Shultz demonstrates the reverse relaunch multiple times and explains technique at the beach and on grass. He shows how to perform small jumps and some “scudding” or sand skiing with a power kite–wow.
